School Uniform Guidance

1Introduction

1.1 It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school-organised event outside normal school hours.

2 Aims and Objectives

2.1 Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:

  • promotes a sense of pride in the school;

  • engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school whilst upholding an inclusive approach;

  • can act as a social leveller by creating a common identity amongst all pupils and reduce peer pressure to wear the latest fashions or other expensive clothes;

  • is practical and smart;

  • identifies the children with the school;

  • is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money;

  • complies with the Human Rights Act 1998 and Equality act 2010;

  • takes into account key considerations such as safeguarding requirements and is designed with health and safety in mind.

3 Jewellery/Haircuts

3.1 We want our uniform to encourage an appropriate tone for learning and not the promotion of fashion eg through haircuts and accessories, jewellery, make-up, nail varnish or length of skirts.

3.2 Ear-ring studs in pierced ears are permitted but we ask the children to either remove them during PE and games, or cover them with a plaster/tape, to prevent them from causing injury.

4 The Role of Parents/Carers

4.1 We ask all parents/carers to support the school uniform policy by sending their child to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork.

4.2 We are an inclusive school and if any parent would like the school to modify the uniform policy, they should make representation, in the first instance, to the headteacher. The policy will be implemented in line with the Human Rights Act 1998 and Equality Act 2010 and take into account key considerations such as safeguarding requirements and the health, safety and discipline of our pupils.

5 The Role of Governors

5.1 The local governing committee supports the headteacher in implementing the school uniform policy. It considers all representations from parents regarding the uniform policy and liaises with the headteacher to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensitivity.

5.2 It is the governors’ responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all regulations concerning equal opportunities.

5.3 Governors ensure that the school uniform policy helps children to dress sensibly, in clothing that is hardwearing, safe and practical.

6 Monitoring and Review

6.1 The governing body monitors and reviews the school uniform policy through its committee work by:

  • seeking the views of parents, to ensure that they agree with and support the policy;

  • considering, with the headteacher, any requests from parents for individual children to modify the school uniform;

  • requiring the headteacher to report to the governors on the way the school uniform policy is implemented.
