Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

Depth of Questioning

Checking children’s prior understanding of a concept so that next steps in learning can be accurately planned for.

Encouraging children to reflect, question and apply their current thinking, making links with what they already know.

Inspiring children to embrace the big questions such as equality, deprivation, justice, sustainability and conservation.

Responsibility for Own Learning

Self-assessment for own approach to, and attitude towards learning.

Being in the driving seat for own learning, having the awareness to plan and organise own thinking, make decisions about when to revisit learning, manage distractions, ask a question or move on.

Participating fully.

Resilience

The analogy of the Learning Pit helps us become more confident, positive and independent thinkers.

Willing to have another go with a growth mindset.

Adopt an ‘I can do it’ approach.

Learn from marvellous mistakes.

Small Steps

Slight variations in the learning journey

eg. using apparatus, recognising visual representations, verbalising key vocabulary or thinking.

eg. small changes in the content or context of learning

…allows for connections to be made with existing secure knowledge and understanding as well as the application and transfer of new learning.
