Supporting your children with their reading at home

We encourage children to read daily at home either to themselves or to an adult or with a younger sibling.  Any kind of reading, whatever the genre or text type helps to develop children's confidence, enjoyment and engagement with texts.

Discussion of texts is a vital part of children's further reading development as they progress with their reading fluency.  Continuing to read with older children can support their comprehension and their understanding of the ways that authors write.  Please see the document below if you would like some support with the kinds of questions or discussion prompts that you could use in order to encourage children to engage with their reading material.

Progression of grammar terminology that children should be familiar with.

Here is an example of a rubric that we have used to the marking and assessment of independent writing at the end of a learning journey. The rubrics reflect the teaching and learning from across the whole of the current learning journey. We share the rubrics with the children, which help them to focus on the key aspects of punctuation, grammar and creativity in their writing.
